It may be helpful to contrast Biblical counseling from psychotherapy. People often seek counseling because their best efforts have failed. According to Wikipedia, psychotherapy is “talk therapy.” It involves conversing with another person about his or her problems. Most often therapy aims to resolve troublesome thoughts, feelings, or behaviors, resulting in a higher level of independent functioning, self-sufficiency, and an increased sense of well being.
The Biblical counselor is an agent of change, led by the Holy Spirit who is the true counselor. We believe that God equips the Biblical counselor for this role. Biblical counseling is based upon The Bible, God’s sovereignty, insight from the Holy Spirit, and the transformative grace of Jesus Christ.
